After a long time gathering disapproval because of the color of the actress’ skin, it recently became clear that “The Little Mermaid” will be on the screen in May next year.
Here’s what the film company has to say about the new adaptation: “In 1989, a well-known fairy tale came to life on the big screen in a beautiful, musically magical animated adaptation that captured the imaginations and hearts of millions of viewers and became an instant classic – Disney’s The Little Mermaid“.
In addition to its tremendous financial and cultural success, the film also ushered in a hugely successful decade-long period known as the Disney Renaissance, in which the studio returned to its roots and created some of its biggest and most beloved hits.” .
In May 2023, “The Little Mermaid” will return to the screen in an equally impressive and captivating feature version, which promises an unforgettable experience in cinemas, marking a new memorable chapter in the history of “Disney”.
The first teaser trailer for “The Little Mermaid” lifts the curtain on the remarkable underwater world of Atlantica, hinting at the familiar but also many new wonders to be found in the ambitious production, helmed by Oscar nominee Rob Marshall (“Chicago”, “The Memoirs” of a Geisha”), who is working with Disney for the fourth time after the success of “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” “Into the Woods” and “Mary Poppins,” is back.
The trailer also offers our first look at the iconic Ariel and her beautiful voice, voiced by Grammy-nominated actress and singer Halle Bailey.
“The Little Mermaid” tells about the beautiful, gifted with a divine voice, Ariel – the youngest daughter of the ruler of the underwater kingdom of Atlantica, King Triton.
Ariel is keenly interested in the human world and dreams of discovering what lies beyond the sea – something her father strictly forbids her to do.
One day, during a fierce storm, Ariel rescues from a shipwreck the handsome Prince Eric, with whom she falls deeply in love and decides to do everything possible to meet him on land. This leads her into the arms (and tentacles) of the evil sea witch Ursula, who lures the mermaid with a hellish deal. Ursula will transform her into a human for three days, in exchange for her strangely beautiful voice – the only thing Prince Eric remembers from their meeting.
Within these three days, Ariel must make Eric fall in love with her and give her “true love’s kiss”. If that happens, Ariel will forever remain human, otherwise she will forever belong to Ursula as a mermaid.
The Little Mermaid is written by Jane Goldman (“Stardust”) and David Magee (“Life of Pi”), based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen.
Along with Halle Bailey, as King Triton and the witch Ursula we will see the stars Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy. Jonah Hower-King is Prince Eric, and in other iconic roles we will hear the voices of David Diggs as Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder and Aquafina as Scuttle. The film also stars Noma Dumenzveni, Jude Akwudike, Lorena Andrea, Kaisa Mohamar and others.
Dive into the magical world of “The Little Mermaid” is scheduled from May 26 only in cinemas in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D in a dubbed and subtitled version.
