They discovered antibodies neutralizing all variants of COVID-19

A team of researchers from Tel Aviv University has shown how antibodies isolated from the immune system of those who have recovered from COVID-19 successfully neutralize all known variants of the new coronavirus, the press service of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported in its bulletin, citing a press release from the university. BTA.

According to the authors of the study, the discovery eliminates the need for booster vaccinations and strengthens the immunity of risk groups of the population.

The authors of the study are Dr Natalia Freund and PhD students Michael Mohr and Ruofan Li from the Department of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology at the Faculty of Medicine. It was conducted in collaboration with Dr. Ben Crocker of the University of California San Diego, Prof. Ye Xiang of Tsinghua University in Beijing, Prof. Meital Gal-Tanami and Dr. Moshe Desso of Bar-Ilan University. The results were published in the journal Nature Communications Biology.

The study continues work on a preliminary study from October 2020, at the height of the COVID crisis. Dr. Freund and her colleagues then sequenced all the immune system B cells from the blood of people who had recovered from the original variant of the new coronavirus and isolated nine antibodies that these patients’ bodies had produced. Now researchers are finding that some of these antibodies are very effective at neutralizing all variants of the new coronavirus, including Delta and Omicron.

“With our previous study, we showed that the different antibodies formed in response to infection with the original variant of the virus target different parts of the virus. The most effective antibodies are those that bind to the spike protein of the virus, at the same place where the spike binds to the cellular receptor ACE2. We are of course not the only ones to have isolated these antibodies, and health systems around the world made extensive use of them until the emergence of different variants of the coronavirus that rendered most of them useless. With the present study, we show that two other antibodies, TAU-1109 and TAU-2310, which bind the spike protein at a different site than the other antibodies concentrate, were actually extremely effective at neutralizing the Delta and Omicron variants. Our results showed that the neutralization efficiency of TAU-1109 for Omicron is 92 percent and 90 percent for Delta neutralization TAU-2310 neutralizes the Omicron variant with an efficiency of 84 percent hundred and Delta with 97% efficiency,” said Dr. Freund.

According to her, the surprising effectiveness of these antibodies may be related to the evolution of the virus.

According to her, these antibodies could revolutionize the fight against COVID-19.

“We have to look at the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of previous disease outbreaks that humanity has witnessed. People vaccinated against smallpox at birth who are around 50 years old today still have antibodies and therefore probably for protected, at least partially, from the monkeypox virus,” she said.
