The head of the military-civil administration of the Zaporizhzhya region, Yevgeny Balitsky, told TASS that the work of the Zaporizhzhya NPP is no longer possible under conditions of shelling. Therefore, the authorities do not rule out the possibility of a complete shutdown of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.
“With a high degree of probability, we will be forced to stop the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, since its operation will be impossible in such conditions (under shelling of the Armed Forces of Ukraine – TASS note), and, most likely, we will switch to work at diesel generators, since the operation of a nuclear power plant in this mode with a high degree of probability cannot continue. We haven’t completely solved this problem yet, most likely we will have to make such a decision,” he said.
Earlier, the chairman of the public movement “We are together with Russia” Vladimir Rogov stated that as a result of damage to power lines due to shelling by the armed forces of Ukraine, the power of the sixth power unit of the NPP was reduced to 13.5%.
According to the Russian news agency, “Ukrainian security forces have recently been regularly shelling the nuclear power plant with heavy artillery.” In addition, they attempted a landing with the aim of capturing the Zaporizhzhia NPP before the visit of the IAEA mission.
In a report published on Tuesday, the IAEA called for the creation of a safety zone around the nuclear power plant to prevent accidents caused by the military action.
