Initially, the Ukrainian army planned a much larger counteroffensive, but after a joint analytical exercise with the United States, it was decided to narrow the mission and concentrate only on actions in the Kherson region, CNN reported.
According to Western officials and Ukrainian sources of the publication, the preparation for the offensive of the ASU included participation in “war games” – analytical exercises. They are designed to help the Ukrainian military understand what forces they need to have in order to succeed in various scenarios, the American television clarifies.
According to the media, the initial intention of the VSU was for a broad counteroffensive, but in recent weeks it was decided to undertake a limited offensive mission in the south, in the Kherson region.
Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder confirmed to CNN that the US has regular, “routine” dialogue with the military at various levels with Ukraine, but declined to comment on the specifics of those interactions.
Ryder said the U.S. military provides information to its Ukrainian counterparts to help them better understand the threats they face, but the final decisions about their actions “are made by the Ukrainians.”
CNN sources claim that there is currently a relative balance between Ukrainian and Russian forces, but the West is not in a hurry to call the military operation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the southern part of the country a counter-offensive.
According to the latest intelligence data, it is not yet clear to what extent Ukraine will be able to regain control over the occupied territories, reports the American media.
