The six figures to remember about e-commerce in France in 2022


Like every beginning of the year, the Federation of e-commerce and distance selling (Fevad) draws up its annual report on e-commerce. The opportunity to take stock of the major trends in online sales. We retained six digits of this presentation. Here they are.

€146.9 billion

This is the record amount spent by French people on the Internet in 2022, up 13.8% compared to 2021, i.e. “the equivalent of the automotive or construction sector“, said Marc Lolivier, the general delegate of the Fevad. “These results are driven by the significant increase in sales in the transport, tourism and leisure sector, which are driving the services sector (+36% over one year, i.e. +50% compared to 2019)“, specifies the press release. Sales of products on the Internet are however down 7% compared to 2021, but up 33% compared to 2019.

2.3 billion

This is the number of transactions carried out on online sales sites in France in 2022. This figure shows an increase of 6.5% compared to 2021.

65 euros

This is the amount of the average basket in 2022, up 6.9% over one year.

200 billion euros

This is the symbolic bar that e-commerce turnover in France should exceed in 2025, according to Fevad.

This is the percentage of 12-25 year olds who make more than half of their purchases on the Internet, according to a focus on the buying behavior of Generation Z, 12-25 year olds, produced by Odoxa for Fevad with 1,440 online buyers, including 609 young people. This is more than the general population (28%). 75% of 12-25 year olds use their smartphone to make online purchases, 14 points more than all online shoppers (61%).

It is the percentage of 18-25 year olds who bought refurbished or second-hand products in 2022, and it is in tech that this trend seems to find the most resonance.

Also note that Amazon, Leboncoin and Vinted occupy the first three steps of the podium of the most visited e-commerce sites in France. Last but not least, the Gen Z study shows that “influencers” are now preferred over advertising (51% vs. 46%); the top 3 of the most influential influencers are made up of Squeezie, McFly and Carlito and Michou…
