Ricciardo is a former graduate of Red Bull’s young driver academy. The 33-year-old from Perth drove for the Toro Rosso team in 2012 and 2013. He was then named as Mark Webber’s successor at Red Bull.
The Australian immediately made a good impression in his first year as driver for the team from Milton Keynes. Then he finished 3rd in the championship and won races in Canada, Hungary and Belgium. This was followed by two podium finishes in Red Bull’s difficult 2015 season. In 2016, Ricciardo recorded his first F1 pole position on the streets of Monte Carlo and came very close to victory. However, he won the race in Malaysia, followed by Max Verstappen. He was also the only driver to finish all races of the 2016 season.
In 2017, he won the crazy Grand Prix of Azerbaijan and grabbed eight more podiums. The following year he triumphed in China and Monaco. Immediately after the end of the race in Monte Carlo, Ricciardo threw himself into the pool around the circuit and was very happy to get back for the lost victory in 2016.
After leaving Red Bull, Ricciardo struggled immensely at Renault and McLaren. The experienced Aussie recorded just one win and two more climbs on the ladder from 2019-2022.
During the weekend in Abu Dhabi, Dr. Helmut Marko stated that Ricciardo will return to Milton Keynes next season. In response to the words of the Austrian, Ricciardo announced that he had not yet signed a contract. Red Bull boss Christian Horner also denied Dr Marco’s claims. After all, the long-awaited return of the Australian racer to the Red Bull family was announced today.
“It’s great that Daniel is back in the Red Bull family. He has tremendous talent and such a brilliant character. I know the whole factory is excited to welcome him home. In his role as test and third driver, Daniel will give us the opportunity to diversify our activities by supporting the development of the car, as well as helping the team with his experience and knowledge of what it takes to succeed in F1. We are very happy to work with Daniel Ricciardo again. We look forward to everything he will bring to the team in 2023,” said Red Bull director Christian Horner.
“My smile says it all. I’m really excited to be returning home to Red Bull as the third driver in 2023. I already have so many fond memories of my time here. The welcome from Christian, Dr. Marco and the entire team is something I am truly grateful for. For me personally, the opportunity to contribute to and be surrounded by the best team in Formula 1 is extremely attractive. It also gives me time to recharge and focus. I look forward to being with the team and helping them with simulator work, test sessions and commercial activities. Let’s get started!” shared Ricciardo.
