Portugal coach Fernando Santos has criticized Cristiano Ronaldo for his reaction to being substituted during the game against South Korea. The striker showed his frustration when he was subbed off in the 65th minute. He was caught on camera saying: “He’s in a hurry to replace me.”
After the match, everyone in the Portuguese camp tried to explain that Ronaldo’s reaction was aimed at a South Korean player. At his press conference today before tomorrow’s round of 16 match against Switzerland, however, Santosh changed his position.
“Immediately after the match I spoke and I said something that I will repeat today: I didn’t hear anything on the pitch, I was too far away, so I only saw him arguing with a South Korean player. Did I watch the tape? Yes. I didn’t like it, not at all liked it. From that moment we resolved things internally in the team. Everything is cleared now we are thinking about the match tomorrow. Everyone is focused on the match,” commented Santosh.
Although he clarified what happened to Ronaldo himself, the coach refused to confirm that the striker will be among the starters tomorrow: “I tell the team in the dressing room. When we are in the stadium, you will know the line-up. They know this, it is like that since we arrived. I will start with the team I think he should play. I’ve been doing this my whole career. The “Ronaldo” issue is over, the rotation in the team has been decided. Everything is clarified,” concluded the experienced specialist.
