Convenience of use
The Polti SV220 stands discreetly in our laboratory. Its slender look and the possibility of dismantling its handle allow the steam cleaner to be stored very easily. If it looks very classic, we still regret the somewhat sloppy finishes; some plastic parts, for example, still have traces of the molds and some materials seem fragile and not very robust.
On the body of the broom, a control panel is limited to a steam flow variator and an LED indicating the heating status of the device. Below, the 320 ml tank is not removable or very easy to fill. It is therefore necessary to use a carafe to fill it without spilling it all around. In the case of very hard water, the Italian manufacturer recommends using 50% demineralized water; and as often, no detergent can be added to the tank.
Once filled, the SV220 is ready to clean. Its rectangular head is wide enough to quickly cover surfaces; beware, however, of the joint between the latter and the handle, which is not flexible for a penny. It is therefore impossible to rotate the washing head between furniture. On the other hand, it passes very easily under low furniture and the broom is easy to move because of its light weight (barely 2.3 kg).
No hose is provided to attach the accessories and transform the Polti into a portable cleaner, whereas the more advanced model, the SV240, is equipped with it. It is therefore necessary to fix the accessories directly on the body of the device; for example, you have to hook the “spear”, then one of the two small brushes.
We therefore prefer the flexible attachment system, which the Black+Decker SteaMitt masters perfectly, for more comfort and maneuverability. The SV220 can indeed find itself in difficulty when faced with thin and narrow places, too bad. In all, the Polti has six accessories, when some competitors have none; this is the case, for example, of the Kärcher SC 3 Upright EasyFix.
Finally, once the SV220 has been transformed into a handheld cleaner, the steam is no longer released continuously; it is up to the user to activate it using a button located on the handle.
We have already mentioned the ease of storing the SV220 thanks to its slender silhouette. The cord wraps, meanwhile, behind the handle of the device.
As with the SV650_style, Polti provides two mops. But be careful, according to their label, they would not go through the washing machine. Indeed, the user should wash them by hand; which is somewhat surprising, as most wipes can usually be machine washed at 60°C.
Another small disappointment about mops: their fastening system. These abandon the classic sticky band and adopt a cord to be tightened once the wipe has been put in place; which is not at all ergonomic.
But once put on, the mop does its job perfectly. To test it, we smeared lipstick, club soda, carbon black, and oil on our lab floor. We let the device warm up for 35 seconds, then go back and forth.
Thanks to their sponge-like texture, the wipes get through soda and oil in one go. Even better, the carbon black disappeared completely after five round trips, leaving no streaks after the passage of the device. And lipstick, the toughest substance, is removed in just six round trips. The SV220 thus follows the Kärcher SC 5 EasyFix, the cador of steam cleaners.
Very easy to use.
Excellent washing performance.
Low capacity, non-removable water tank.
Mops with strange fasteners that do not machine wash.
