Mick Schumacher found out at the very end of the 2022 season that remains without a place in Formula 1. The news about the departure from the Ferrari academy came a little earlier. The 23-year-old pilot will probably have to look for an option to continue his career without the added burden of participating in the Scuderia’s young talent program.
“First I want to say that Mick is a great driver. I think he made some serious progress during the season. I think he’s shown his ability to progress given where he started and how far he’s come,” noted Ferrari boss Mattia Binoto.
“Haas made their choice for next year. We will have to sit down with Mick and decide what is best for his future. We have no place to offer him. We will be completely open to a different choice on his part, because it is important to take advantage of your chances when you are so young,” added the head of the Scuderia.
One such possibility appears to be the Mercedes team, where Mick Schumacher could be a third driver. The Brackley team’s reserve players will be in other teams next year. Nick de Vries becomes the starter at Alfa Tauri, and Stoffel Vandoorne will be a reserve at Aston Martin.
“I am very proud that Nick has the opportunity to actually drive in Formula 1, although it will happen with another ‘family’,” commented Toto Wolff
“He deserves to be in Formula 1. Stoffel too. They have flown the nest, and Mick has always been close to our hearts because of Michael and the entire Schumacher family. Ralf drives for a long time for us in DTM, his son drives Mercedes in GT. Mick is an intelligent and well-mannered young man. He achieved a lot of success in the small formulas. We believe we could take care of him under the right circumstances. He would fit the team.”
“We have not signed anything, nor have we discussed terms. I’m looking at the situation openly because I think it just makes sense. I think Mick really suits us and now we have to make things happen if Sabine [Кем] wants, if he wants too,” said Wolff.
Mick Schumacher commented that Mercedes is one of his options for next year.
“Mercedes is a great brand. Their achievements in Formula 1 are incredible. Now I’m looking at my options and Mercedes is one of them. My father went from Ferrari to Mercedes and I see no reason why I shouldn’t. Now I have time to go over everything carefully. I hope there is a solution soon. But it’s great to hear the comments from Mercedes and especially what Toto said,” said Mick Schumacher.
“We’re quite close to the points and we have AlphaTauri quite close as well so hopefully we’ll get them at the start, and we’ll be able to manage the race from there.”#HaasF1 #AbuDhabiGP pic.twitter.com/W2ZOXdnRO4
