Matthew Perry spent $9 million to recover from his addictions

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Matthew Perry says he spent literally a fortune to get sober.

The 53-year-old “Friends” actor mentioned the seven-figure sum he spent on his road to sobriety in an interview on Sunday while promoting the upcoming release of his memoir.

“I probably spent $9 million or something trying to get sober.” Perry said. The actor also revealed that he recently celebrated 18 months of sobriety, meaning he was newly sober for the popular Friends reunion special, which airs in May 2021.

Perry has already opened up to People magazine about the new book and her decades-long journey to give up drugs and alcohol, explaining that “it all starts with sobriety.”

Perry reveals he was close to death after his colon ruptured, leading to a five-month hospitalization and a colostomy. This harrowing ordeal also served as a catalyst for him to finally get sober.

“My therapist said, ‘Next time you think about taking OxyContin, just think about the fact that you’re going to have a colostomy bag for the rest of your life.he explains.

The Golden Globe nominee also credited his Friends co-stars — Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc — for being there for him in his toughest moments.

“They were understanding and patient”says Perry. “It’s like with penguins. In nature, when one of them is sick or very injured, the other penguins surround it, support it and walk it around until the penguin can’t move on its own. And this is something my colleagues did for me.”
