The English champion Manchester City went to the first position in the Premier League standings after a 4:2 success against Crystal Palace. The Citizens conceded the first two goals after a John Stones own goal and a Joachim Andersen strike, but everything changed after the break. Bernardo Silva equalized at the beginning of the half, and Erling Haaland scored three goals within 19 minutes for the final 4:2.
Already in the first minute, the goalkeeper of Londoners Guaita had to intervene, but in the fourth minute a goal fell into the goal of the “citizens”. After a cross from a foul by Eze, the defense of the hosts did not orient themselves well, the ball deflected to Stones and ended up in the net. Ederson was also at fault for the goal as he went wide of the goal line and failed to make a good tackle, which then led to the foul that led to the goal.
Guardiola’s team possessed the ball for large periods and made attempts to equalize, but not very successfully. Haaland twice completed attacks, but sent the ball wide of the goal. Palace generally coped with the opponent’s attacks. In the 21st minute, the Londoners scored a second goal. The goal fell again after Eze’s cross from a static position, this time from a corner kick. Man City’s defense lost its bearings again and left Andersen uncovered, and the defender headed the ball past Ederson.
A powerful shot from Ducouret in the 28th minute went right into the hands of Ederson. When the ball was brought in by the goalkeeper, Odson Eduard put his foot down, intercepted the attempted pass and sent the ball into the net, but the referee judged it to be a foul and disallowed the goal. Shortly before the break, Bernardo Silva crossed and Foden headed the ball over the bar.
Guardiola’s side did not start the second half at a high pace. However, the “citizens” came back into the game in the 53rd minute. Bernardo Silva received the ball from Rodri, broke through the edge of the penalty area and shot. The ball deflected slightly into Schlup and left no chance for Guaita.
Manchester City had the upper hand in the second half and pressed the opposition, despite not playing one of their best games. After an hour, Bernardo Silva made a great break, but it ended with a shot wide of the goal. Guardiola brought on Gundogan and Alvarez in place of Cancelo and Mahrez. Seconds after the changes, the home team equalized. Foden controlled the ball perfectly and found Haaland perfectly, who scored after a header.
The Norwegian scored his second goal in the 70th minute and City’s turnaround was complete. After an excellent combination in the penalty area, the ball reached Stones. The defender was unable to make a precise shot, but his attempt turned out to be a perfect pass to the Norwegian and he made no mistake. Haaland scored his first hat-trick for Man City in the 81st minute when he was brought on by Gundogan.
After the success, Man City lead the table with ten points, while Palace are 13th with four points. In the next round, the Londoners host Brentford, while City host newcomers Nottingham Forest.
