Luis Enrique: I only made a mistake with one player, we are better than all the semi-finalists

Now former Spain coach Luis Enrique has given his first interview since leaving the job. He was released after the 2022 World Cup, with the more accurate wording being that his contract was not renewed.

At the World Cup, Spain was eliminated in the 1/8 finals after a clash with the sensational Morocco, which virtually sealed Enrique’s fate.

In an interview with Marca, the specialist admitted that if he could turn back time, he would only change one player from his World Cup squad. But he categorically refused to reveal the name of the big disappointment. “

“Of the 26 players I took at the World Cup, I wouldn’t take one and I would take another in his place. But I won’t talk about names. There is one player I didn’t like and I’m disappointed with what I saw.” Enrique said.

He also lamented that just one game had spoiled his stint in charge of Spain and was adamant that none of the teams that reached the semi-finals were stronger than La Roja.

“90 minutes can trash 4 years of work. It’s cruel, but that’s football. I’m so sorry because this team was prepared to step on the top. To be honest, looking at the teams that reached the semi-finals, there’s no one better from ours,” Enrique also shared.

The coach was succeeded by youth team coach Luis de la Fuente, who has made it clear that he intends to continue with a club team. According to the Spanish media, the biggest chance for Enrique is Atletico Madrid, where they are already looking for a replacement for Diego Simeone.
