George Clooney and musicians from U2 were among the honorees at a ceremony at the Kennedy Center, AFP and AP reported. The prestigious culture awards were presented in the presence of US President Joe Biden.
Each year, the Kennedy Center presents awards to certain artists for their influence on American culture.
In addition to President Joe Biden and his wife Jill, Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband were also present.
61-year-old actor George Clooney thanked for the tribute. Clooney arrived at the ceremony in the company of his wife Amal, who is a lawyer specializing in the protection of human rights.
“I grew up in a small town in Kentucky and never imagined that one day I would be sitting in the Kennedy Center. I am honored to be among so many incredible artists,” Clooney said in his statement.
Julia Roberts, Clooney’s longtime friend, called him “the perfect combination of gentleman and celebrity.”
Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder performed U2’s “Elevation.” Singer and philanthropist Bono together with U2 have sold 170 million albums and were honored for their legendary tracks “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, “Desire”, “With or without you”.
Actor Sacha Baron Cohen stepped into the role of his character Borat during the ceremony.
The so-called “Empress of Soul” Gladys Knight, who also received a Kennedy Center Award, said she was “overwhelmed.” Tanya Leon, 79, is thankful for getting recognition for a different type of classical music.
