Billionaire tennis player Jessica Pegula failed to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final after losing 3-6, 6-7 to world No. 1 Iga Schwiontek at the US Open.
The Pole showed more solid play in the important moments and is aiming for her third Slam title after the two at Roland Garros in 2020 and 2022.
For Pegula, the disappointment was great and it was evident in the press conference after the match, although the American had a beer in her hand during the conversation with the journalists.
One of the representatives of the media was tempted to raise the question about the beer and the answer was the following: “I help myself to urinate for the doping test, but it’s also good to relieve the disappointment.”
With his victory, Schwiontek broke a negative streak of the first in the rankings, since 2016 they still failed to reach the semi-finals of the US Open. The last time it was done by the recently retired Serena Williams.
In the other match of the day, Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus defeated Karolina Pliskova from the Czech Republic 6:1, 7:6 and will play Šviontek.
For Sabalenka, this is the second consecutive semifinal in New York after the one last year, in which she lost to the Canadian Leila Fernandez.
The winner of the Sabalenka – Shviontek match will play in the final against the winner of the other semi-final, in which Ons Jabert (Tunisia) and Caroline Garcia (France) will face each other.
