Bayern Munich has been a complete hegemon in the Bundesliga for many years now and started the new season in the championship in the familiar scary way – with three consecutive victories and a goal difference of 15:1.
On Saturday, however, someone was found to stop the Bavarians, and that too on their own turf. Borussia Mönchengladbach drew 1:1 with the champions, but the way it happened doesn’t give much hope to Bayern’s rivals.
In order for the guests to reach the point, a true miracle was needed from Borussia goalkeeper Jan Sommer, who set a record for saves in the German elite.
According to the portal Who Scores, there has not been a goalkeeper in the Bundesliga or in Europe’s top 5 championships in general, who has shone with as many as 19 saves in one game – at least since OPTA has been dealing with statistics since 2009.
The Swiss international was everywhere, catching the balls fired at him from close and long range, and the remarkable thing is that 11 of the shots taken were from the penalty area.
Thanks to his heroics, the visitors even came close to victory after Marcus Thuram opened the scoring in the first half.
7 minutes before the end of the match, however, Sommer finally capitulated and Leroy Sane equalized.
That didn’t stop the goalkeeper from getting a 10/10 from Sofa Score for his performance.

Jan Sommer broke the Bundesliga record of 14 saves set last year by Hertha’s Alexander Shvolov – again against Bayern, of course.
A compilation of the Swiss’s performances has been gaining traction online, with Manchester United fans seeing why the defender has been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Despite failing to win, Bayern remain at the top of the Bundesliga with 10 points, the same as second-placed Union Berlin.
Borussia Mönchengladbach are in sixth place and are still unbeaten this season.
