iOS 16.3: what changes with the new update deployed by Apple

A security-oriented update? The third version of iOS 16 (16.3), Apple’s operating system for its iPhones, is available for download today. New features, several bug fixes and minor design changes are expected. A 16.3 version of iPadOS also appears to be rolling out.

Support for Security Keys

This update for compatible mobile devices notably provides support for security keys. These devices, which come in the form of a physical USB device, can replace double authentication by email or SMS. To validate the connection, simply connect the key to the iPhone. NFC contactless systems also exist. The arrival of iOS 16.3 actually allows you to associate a key with your Apple account.

The latest update will also deliver support for the upcoming 2nd generation HomePod, which is expected to be released in the United States on February 3, 2023. This HomePod has a similar look to its little brother, but grants a new touch interface , further improved audio performance and the arrival of temperature and humidity sensors, in particular.

Minor changes for emergency calls and SOS

iOS 16.3 also signs the improvement of certain features. This is particularly the case for emergency calls. Too easily triggered before, it will now be necessary to hold the side button with the volume up or down button, then release it to contact the emergency services.

Change in sight also on the side of the emergency SOS functionality by satellite, available only with the new range of iPhone 14. The emergency SOS can be issued more easily: after pressing the side and volume buttons, a countdown will be started before sending the SOS directly.

Finally, many minor software problems are corrected for more security and fluidity. Installing the update couldn’t be simpler. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
