The battle of rights holders against illegal streaming continues in 2023. 53 websites will be blocked in France soon, following a judgment by the Paris court in December 2022. Hosting platforms and several very popular streaming services in the ‘Hexagon are concerned, according to information from The Informed.
Several court decisions
The Union of Phonographic Publishing (SNEP), the National Federation of Film Editors (FNEF), the Union of Cinema Producers (UPC), the Union of Independent Producers (SPI) and the Association of Independent Producers (API ) won their case after two hearings, on December 15, 2022 and January 10, 2023. Every month, several million Internet users use illegal streaming and download sites. A dead loss for rights holders who have been demanding strong measures for many years.
Acting the blocking of these services, the court gave notice to Orange, SFR, Bouygues and Free to prohibit access to the domain names of the sites in question for a period of 18 months. The Association for the fight against audiovisual piracy (ALPA) would have provided a large part of the list of platforms to be blocked.
Ineffective blocking
To prohibit access to these web pages, operators should go through the DNS. As a reminder, the Domain Name System governs the correspondence between a domain name and an IP address (that of the server). Thus, only the DNS of French Internet access providers will block said access. By simply changing the DNS on their devices, an Internet user will still be able to access the platforms. Easier still, the use of a VPN leads to the same result.
In addition, the sites targeted by the legal ban can buy a new domain name which would therefore not be blocked immediately. This real game of cat and mouse has not seemed to show its effectiveness in recent years.
Which sites are affected?
For the time being, and according to information from The Informed53 sites are concerned by the blocking, although a new decision could intervene in a few months.
