The best Bulgarian tennis player Grigor Dimitrov will start directly from the second round of the Sofia Open tournament, which will take place next week on the hard courts in the Arena Armeets hall in the Bulgarian capital. The 2017 champion Dimitrov is seeded No. 3 and rested in the first round, and then awaits the winner of the match between Mikael Imer (Sweden) and Ilya Ivashka (Belarus) for a place in the quarterfinals, with a possible opponent in the quarterfinals of Norway Holger Rune .
So far, the Haskovic player, Sofia Open champion in 2017, has not played any matches against the 24-year-old Swede. Against the 28-year-old Ivashka, the first racket of Bulgaria has an even balance 1:1. Both matches took place in 2021, with Grisho winning 6-4, 6-4 in Geneva and the Belarusian prevailing 6-2, 7-6 (4) in Washington.
Bulgaria’s second racket Dimitar Kuzmanov will face a qualifier in the first round of the ATP 250 series tournament in Sofia, which starts tomorrow. This was determined by the draw, which was drawn today with the participation of Kuzmanov himself. If successful in his first match, Kuzmanov will meet Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic or seventh seed Jack Draper of Great Britain.
Our third representative in the scheme, Alexander Lazarov, will compete with the Czech Jiri Lehechka at the start, and the winner will play the fourth seeded Lorenzo Musetti from Italy. The first placed in Sofia is the champion of the last two editions, Yannick Siner, and the second – the Spaniard Pablo Carreño Busta.
The top four in the tournament schedule qualify directly for the second round. The Italian Yannick Siner is in first place, and Pablo Carreño-Busta (Spain) is second. #3 is Grigor Dimitrov and the fourth is Musetti.
Top seed Ciner will begin the defense of his title from last year against Nuno Borges or a qualifier, with potential quarter-final opponents Stan Wawrinka, Fabio Fognini, Fernando Verdasco and Nikoloz Basilashvili.
An extremely curious first-round clash is between three-time three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka (Switzerland) and Fabio Fognini (Italy). They are in the upper half of the scheme, which also includes Siner and Dimitrov.
Second seed Pablo Carreno Busta (Spain) will start in the second round against Marc Andrea Hüsler (Switzerland) or a qualifier. In the lower part of the diagram are Kuzmanov and Lazarov.
“The tournament is really extremely strong and maybe there is a more favorable draw, but not an easy draw, they are all very good tennis players, even those in the qualifiers,” commented Kuzmanov, who himself drew his opponent.
“My goal is to consolidate the form I have been in throughout the year. I hope to consolidate my victory from last year and already the next goal is to surpass this. The best thing, apart from all the good tennis players who will be playing, is that the fans are coming back to the hall. Whenever Grigor is in Bulgaria and plays, it’s the best thing. This motivates all athletes, us fans, teenagers, this is an advertisement for Bulgaria,” he added.
Tickets for the seventh edition of the tennis tournament in Sofia are on sale – online at Eventim.bg and in the partner network throughout the country.
