Grigor Dimitrov sensationally dropped out of the Sofia Open –

Our best tennis player Grigor Dimitrov lost to the 71st in the world Belarusian Ilya Ivashka with 3:6, 6:7 (3) in the second round of the ATP 250 Sofia Open series tournament in front of 7000 spectators in “Arena Armeets” in Sofia and sensationally dropped out of the race. Grigor rested in the first round and this was his last match in front of his home crowd. The Bulgarian won the tournament in 2017 and dreamed of repeating his success.

In his first match in a little over a month after crashing out in the second round of the US Open, Dimitrov broke in the first game. He got a chance to get it back right away, but didn’t take advantage, and then Ivashka converted another break to take the first set.

In the second part, Dimitrov, the 23rd in the world, played better and at 2:2 created two more opportunities for a breakthrough, but again failed to realize any of them. Subsequently, at 3:4, the Bulgarian escaped from 15:40 on his own serve.

The end of the set was particularly dramatic. At 5:5 in a marathon game, Dimitrov missed four break opportunities, and then he had to save two consecutive match points from Ivashka and from a 15:40 lag in his serve, he reached a tiebreak.

In it, world number 71 Ivashka took an early 4-1 points advantage, then at 6-3 Dimitrov made a forehand error to lose his first match on home soil in five-and-a-half years, when he last played in the competition in Sofia.

As many as four Bulgarian tennis players will take to the Sofia Open 2022 court on Thursday for their quarterfinal matches in the doubles competition.

Aleksandar Lazarov and Aleksandar Donski will take on seed leaders Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli of Italy, while Yanaki Milev and Piotr Nesterov will play runners-up Rafael Matos (Brazil) / David Vega Hernandez (Spain).

The last six matches of the second round will be played in singles.

The first two seeds – Yannick Siner – champion in the last two editions, and Pablo CarreƱo Busta – begin their participation in the tournament.

Yanaki Milev and Pyotr Nesterov made their debut on the world doubles tour with a victory in the first round in Sofia.
