Giorgia Meloni stirred the spirits with a rape video

The leader of the Italian Brothers party, Giorgia Meloni, who is vying to become the country’s first female prime minister, came under heavy criticism after she posted on her Twitter account on Monday a video of her raping a woman.

Meloni claims the deliberately blurred video shows a refugee seeking asylum in Italy raping a Ukrainian woman who was also granted protection by Italian authorities.

The clip was filmed by an eyewitness through the window of his home, and the woman’s cries for help can be heard on the recording.

“We cannot remain silent in the face of this brutal act of sexual violence committed in broad daylight in Piacenza by an asylum seeker. I embrace this woman. I will do everything I can to restore security to our cities,” Meloni wrote in his post on Twitter.

The same video was later shared by the leader of the populist League party, Matteo Salvini.

Local Italian authorities have confirmed that a 55-year-old woman was attacked in Piacenza over the weekend, and a 27-year-old asylum seeker from Guinea was detained in connection with the incident.

However, both Meloni and Salvini have come under fire for sharing the clip, which many say is political opportunism and capitalizing on the woman’s misfortune for political dividends.

Democratic Party leader Enrico Letta, Meloni’s main opponent ahead of the September 25 election, said sharing the video “crossed the lines of decency and decency”.

Another political leader – Carlo Calenda, chairman of the centrist “Accione” formation, commented that Giorgia “did something that is unworthy of a civilized country and is against women”.

The campaign for the parliamentary elections in Italy is becoming increasingly fierce, and the topic of refugees is at the center of the debates, especially after the brutal murder of 39-year-old Nigerian Alika Ogorchukwu – a seller of small goods in the town of Civitanova Marche.

Although the police categorically rejected racism and xenophobia as motives for the killing at the time, a number of human rights organizations pointed out that the racial element was an important part of this crime.

Meloni herself and her Italian Brothers party have turned much of the focus of their election campaign against immigration.

After facing criticism from her political opponents, Meloni released a video explaining that she did not violate the victim’s dignity because the footage was deliberately pixelated and her identity was not revealed.

She also said her opponents are focusing too much on the sharing of the video and not on the issue of refugee violence.

“Why don’t you talk about it? Because otherwise you’re going to have to admit that security in our cities is out of control, including as a result of the surreal immigration policies you’re pursuing,” Meloni said.

The Italian Brothers, which has its roots in Italy’s fascist movement, is currently leading the polls ahead of the September 25, 2022 vote by several percentage points over the Democratic Party.

Meloni expects to receive significant support from her coalition partners, the League party and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forward Italy, while Letta has allied with many smaller parties.
