The German football legend and former Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich and Chelsea player has hit out at Liverpool’s defensive leader Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman has been heavily criticized for his performances during the derby with Manchester United, lost by the Merseysiders with 1:2. The defender bore the brunt of Jaden Sancho’s goal early in the match when he looked on as the Englishman signed instead of trying to prevent Alisson’s goal.
Van Dijk has drawn criticism from Liverpool fans and Jamie Carragher, and Ballack described him as lucky not to be playing at a time when the Premier League has strikers like Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry or Wayne Rooney.
“Van Dijk is lucky to be playing at a time when there are no strikers of the caliber of Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard, Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor or Diego Costa. No wonder he considered the best defender,” Ballack was quoted as saying by Football Arena.
😳 “Virgil van Dijk is very lucky to play in an era where there is no Drogba, Lampard, Alan Shearer, Henry, Rooney, Van Persie, Tevez, Adebayor & Diego Costa. No wonder they think he is the best defender in the league .”
