Four candidates for Cristiano’s “week”.

Manchester United’s legendary number 7 shirt could soon be free again. Its current owner and one of the most iconic ones, Cristiano Ronaldo, will almost certainly leave Old Trafford after the scandals that have erupted around him in recent days.

The superstar refused to come on as a substitute against Tottenham in the week and came off the bench early for the Red Devils before being left out of the squad for Chelsea’s visit to Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Erik ten Hag has made it clear that he will not allow Ronaldo’s self-will to continue this time, and the footballer himself has long wanted to leave as his role in the team is not what he is used to.

The brewing storm was quelled in the best possible way by the Dutch boss as United played hard to win against Tottenham, then earned a point in west London with Casemiro’s late equalizer to make it 1-1.

Unfortunately for Ronaldo and his manager, however, there is no queue for his signature, as is likely to be the case in the winter transfer window.

However, the separation is inevitable, and the English media are already pondering the question of who will succeed the iconic No. 7.

Its most likely new owner is Jaden Sancho, who was brought in from Borussia Dortmund last summer. The striker wore the number at the German giants and would no doubt like to have the “seven” on his back again. When he returned to England, the number belonged to Edinson Cavani, and the Uruguayan generously gave it to Ronaldo.

Ajax signing Antony can also lay claim to the shirt that now has Ronaldo written on it. The Brazilian has made a big impact since his transfer and is certainly in better form than Sancho at the moment.

It would be a huge show of confidence and almost certainly won’t happen, but Alejandro Garncho won’t refuse if offered the number.

The young Argentine burst onto the scene last season after his goals and performances secured United’s first FA Youth Cup in more than a decade. At just 18 years of age, he is already regularly training with the first team and if he continues to develop in this upward trend, it may not be long before he breaks through to the stars.

Cristiano will not change even if Sir Alex goes down on the touchline

Finally – maybe the next United “week” isn’t playing for the club at the moment? The shirt could be saved for another star summer signing, which Ten Hag will no doubt be chasing in 2023. Frenkie de Jong continues to remain the big target and Old Trafford are closely monitoring the situation surrounding the Barcelona player after several unsuccessful attempts to sign him.

The fact is that since Ronaldo’s first stint with the Red Devils, no one has been able to do anything meaningful with the No.7 on their back, so the pressure on its next owner will be enormous.
