For the first time in 12 years: a Bulgarian played as a starter in the Bundesliga

A forgotten football joy – a Bulgarian started as a starter in a Bundesliga match for the first time in 12 years.

This became a fact after Ilia Gruev Jr. started for Werder Bremen in the second round match against Stuttgart. The last time a Bulgarian footballer was a starter in the German elite was in the 2010/11 season, when Iliyan Mitsanski played for Kaiserslautern against Wolfsburg.

As is clear, Ilia Gruev Jr. is the son of former international Ilia Gruev and is considered one of the great hopes of Bulgarian football

On the pitch, “Bremen Musicians” took the lead with an early goal, but then allowed a complete reversal. However, with a goal deep in stoppage time, they reached their second point since the start of the campaign.

In another interesting match of the round, Eintracht earned their first point since the start of the season. The Frankfurt team drew 1:1 away to Hertha. Swat Serdar gave the hosts the lead in the third minute and Daichi Kamada equalized early in the second half.

Last year’s Europa League winners had a tough start to the season, losing 6-1 to Bayern and then losing to Real Madrid in the European Super Cup. Eintracht have also gone 10 games without a win in a row in the Bundesliga, a streak that started in March.

Undoubtedly, however, the big surprise in the second round of the Bundesliga was Augsburg’s 2:1 away win over Leverkusen.
