Enemies of Putin and his war are emerging in the Kremlin

Critics and even open enemies of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his war in Ukraine are emerging in the Kremlin. This is according to an analysis of a range of information from Western publications and Russian military bloggers, the American Institute for the Study of War claims in its new report.

According to US intelligence, a person in Putin’s inner circle has directly criticized his “extreme shortcomings” in the conduct of the war against Ukraine. This information appeared in the Washington Post. There are also more and more claims that Putin is being criticized by his allies because of the military losses and the confused mobilization in Russia.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in a written response to The Washington Post, acknowledged that there had been discussions among Putin’s associates regarding the mobilization, but denied that members of the Russian leadership directly confronted Putin.

Despite reports of growing criticism of the Russian president, it cannot yet be said that Putin’s policy is about to change, ISW analyzes. However, the split in the Kremlin is already visible in the publications of Russian military bloggers close to the Kremlin.

More and more Russian publications are talking about two factions in the Kremlin. The first is organized around the Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov and the financier of the Wagner military company Yevgeny Prigozhin, and they are hostile to Russia’s military command. A post by a Russian blogger that has been read almost a million times talks about how Kadyrov and Prigozhin are at the head of a faction that wants to continue the war no matter the cost. Opposing them was a faction of high-ranking Russian generals and politicians who wanted to negotiate with the West to protect their assets from sanctions, but were still afraid of open opposition to Putin.
