Divisions in Germany started – Football world – World Cup

The technical director of the German national team, Oliver Birkhoff, is stepping down after his country crashed out in the group stage of the second consecutive World Cup, AFP reported.

The four-time World Cup winners had a lackluster campaign in Qatar, which included defeat to Japan in their opening match.

Birkhoff and the German Football Association (DFB) have agreed “to terminate his contract early, which runs until 2024,” the association said in a statement.

DFB president Bernd Neuendorf said in a statement that Birkhoff had “rendered great services to (the association)”.

While the last few tournaments “didn’t work out,” it will still be remembered for the “great moments,” Neuendorff said. He highlighted his work at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which Germany won.

“Even in turbulent times, he always pursued his goal and vision and leaves a lasting mark on the DFB,” he added.

The early exit of coach Flick’s team left Germany’s once formidable reputation in tatters.

Neuendorf and Flick called for an overhaul of Germany’s youth football development system ahead of the country’s hosting of the 2024 European Championship.
