Collingwood pair sign new deals

Collingwood pair Nathan Murphy and Ash Johnson have signed contract extensions.

Murphy has signed a fresh two-year deal, while Johnson has inked a one-year extension.

Murphy has won all nine games he has played this season, averaging 6.3 intercept possessions and 5.7 spoils per match.

The 22-year-old defender has played 26 games since arriving at the Magpies in the 2017 draft.

Selected with pick No.3 in last year’s mid-season rookie draft, Johnson kicked two goals on debut against Adelaide in Round 18.

The 24-year-old forward added another three majors in Collingwood’s thrilling win over Essendon last Sunday.

Collingwood GM of Football Graham Wright said in a club statement: “We’re pleased to reward both Nathan and Ash with further opportunity at the Club – they are both on-field talents and off the field they are outstanding individuals and valued teammates.

“Nathan has shown great persistence despite several injury setbacks through the early stages of his career.

“He’s shown dedication and commitment to his development which has allowed him to improve his game particularly regarding his one-percenters this season. Not only does he offer great versatility across the ground, but his courageous defense makes him exciting to watch.

“Since joining us last year, Ash has worked hard to fine tune his craft and he has made great progress through his time with our VFL program, rewarded at AFL-level over the last two rounds.

“We are excited about both Nathan and Ash’s futures, and we look forward to seeing their progress and further development as part of our AFL program.”

Collingwood is aiming for its 10th win in a row when they tackle Port Adelaide at the MCG on Saturday.
