Bologna sack leukemia battler Mihajlovic in ‘difficult decision on human level’

Sinisa Mihajlovic has been fired as coach of Bologna, the Serie A club announced in an emotional statement to the country’s media.

The Serbian has been battling leukemia for nearly two and a half years, but has not stopped leading the team, including returning to the bench when his condition allows.

Bologna fans adore Sinisha for his character and dedication, and the whole of Italy admired him during his difficult months.

“This is my most difficult decision since I have been president of the club – Joey Saputo, the Canadian owner of Bologna, admits in the announcement. – During these years together with Sinisha we have had wonderful, but also painful experiences. Not only the professional, but also the purely human relationship between us is very healthy.

Bologna will always have Mihajlovic’s back for anything he needs. The decision is terribly difficult on a purely human level, not only as a football one.”

Sinisha has been in charge of the club since 2018, making this his second spell at Bologna.

He tried twice to appear on the bench in recent months but was again admitted for hospital treatment, managing training and match processes via video link, phone calls and emails.

But the team started the new season without a win – three draws and two losses, which obviously tipped the scales towards a change.

Also the likely desire of the Serb himself to concentrate on his treatment.
