Benzema scored against both the goalkeeper and the outfield player to become Real’s savior again

Karim Benzema became Real’s savior once again after scoring late goals in a 3-1 win at Espanyol.

The game did not go well for the champions at all, although they took the lead in the 12th minute with a goal by Vinicius Junior. Joselu equalized before the break and the Catalan hosts threatened to do what they did a year ago at this stadium – beat Madrid.

Espanyol had two excellent chances to take the lead in the second half, clearly aware that against a team of Real’s caliber and experience it could prove fatal. And it happened.

Karim hit the far post in the 88th minute, chilling Espanyol’s players, who now had little time to react.

And in added time, their goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte kicked Dani Ceballos in front of the penalty area, for which he was sent off after VAR intervention. The situation was curious as the ball went to Rodrigo and he scored into the empty net, but referee Mario Melero did not let the advantage go.

In the goal stood a field player – defender Leandro Cabrera. From the direct free kick, however, Benzema fired it in for the third goal – 1:3 and three from three for Real at the start of the season, although the champions of Spain and Europe were away in their first three matches.

This was necessary because of the finishing works on their stadium “Santiago Bernabeu”, which will be ready to host matches in 10 days.

Madrid is fully active at the top, and 9 points from the first three rounds collected only one other team – Betis. Espanyol are 16th with just one point.
