Andalusian drama: Red cards, VAR, missed penalty and 14 minutes of extra time

A match that was not for the faint of heart. This is how you can describe the clash between Sevilla and Valencia from the intermediate tenth round in the Spanish La Liga, which ended 1:1. At the stadium in the heart of Andalucia, the match was played with a cosmic 14-minute extra time due to the bullfight and huge nerves.

The ageless Edinson Cavani put Valencia ahead in the 6th minute, but the hosts equalized through Lamela in the 86th. However, the interesting part was yet to come.

First, Papu Gomes was sent off with a straight red card, knocking down Valencia forward Justin Kluivert – son of Barcelona and Netherlands legend Patrick Kluivert – on the grass. The situation was reviewed with VAR and the penalty was replaced with only a yellow card, but Quique Salas was sent off and this led to a penalty for the visitors.

It was entrusted to Bats captain Jose Gaya, but Bono saved and ended up giving a point to this season’s lackluster Sevilla, where coach Lopetegui was replaced by Jorge Sampaoli three rounds ago.

With the point, Valencia now has 15 in eighth place, while Sevilla is 11th with 10 points and in the next round they will have the most difficult task possible – visiting champions Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.
