Despite the announcement of the new iPhone 14 and the new Apple Watch Ultra, Apple stopped for a long time on the presentation of its new AirPods Pro 2 during its keynote. It must be said that they were waiting for these AirPods Pro 2! Launched at the end of 2019, the first AirPods Pro of the name had everyone in agreement both for the excellent feelings of comfort they confer and for the power of their active noise reduction. They are also not left out on the subject of sound performance since since their release, the first AirPods monopolize the highest places in our comparison of the best true wireless headphones.
But now, for almost 3 years, many competitors have managed to do as well, or even better, like the WF-1000XM4 from Sony or the Momentum True Wireless 3 from Sennheiser. Apple therefore had to release this second generation in the hope of regaining the title of best true wireless earphone on the market.
Volume control from the earpiece directly
Despite the statements of certain rumors, the AirPods Pro 2 retain their recognizable design among all. The semi-in-ear format with a stem pointing towards the user’s mouth is therefore still on the program. However, Apple has increased the number of pairs of tips provided from 3 to 4 for increased comfort on a greater number of ear morphologies. The touch sensor has been revised to take into account finger slips. It is therefore now possible to control the volume of your headphones without having to control Siri or take your phone out of your pocket.
Twice as efficient
The main novelties are brought by the new H2 chip, more powerful, but also less energy-consuming: the AirPods Pro 2 are announced with an autonomy of 6 hours per charge (compared to 5 hours on the first AirPods Pro). The AirPods Pro 2 would also be twice as efficient as their predecessors in reducing ambient noise, but also much more precise in reproducing surrounding sounds in “transparent” mode. In addition, it is now possible to map its ears using an iPhone’s TrueDepth camera to significantly improve the performance of Audio Spatial. A feature that we already find at Sony, for example, with its headphones and the 360 Reality Audio format.
The case also incorporates many changes. If the design remains very close, the new case can now be located using the “Locate” app on iOS. A loudspeaker has also been integrated to be able to ring it if you ever lose it between two cushions. This speaker also allows you to give different information such as the pairing status or the remaining battery level. Speaking of which, the case should provide around 4 more charges and can be recharged using the Apple Watch charger. Finally, the case is now equipped with a recess that can be used to hang a wrist strap.
The AirPods Pro 2 will be available for pre-order from this Friday, September 9 for a release scheduled for September 23. They will be marketed at a price of €279, the same price as the first AirPods Pro.
