AFL 2022: Richmond star Dustin Martin to be sidelined for longer with hamstring issue

The unknown surrounding a playing return for Richmond star Dustin Martin has grown after a “setback” to his recovery from a hamstring injury.

Martin has played just eight games in 2022 and none since Round 16 when he suffered what was thought to be a minor hamstring issue.

It kept him out of Richmond’s back-to-back losses to first the Gold Coast Suns and then North Melbourne which have left them in a precarious finals position with a tough few weeks of games ahead.

But on Friday the club confirmed Martin had moved from short term to “medium term” on their injury list with a return unknown with just five games left to go.

“Dustin Martin has had a set back in his recovery from a hamstring strain,” the club said.

“An aggravation to his hamstring will mean Martin remains sidelined for the medium term.

“Richmond will provide a further update when necessary.”

The news comes after Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said on Wednesday that he expected both Martin, who was running laps, and forward Tom Lynch, who also has a hamstring injury, should be back “next week”.

“It had been a little bit slower than we hoped but we are reasonably hopeful he’d be available for next week,” Hardwick said before the revelation Martin had aggravated his injury.

There was no suggestion Martin was done for the season, and potentially for the Tigers with speculation he could look to move to Sydney in 2023.

The Tigers are only hanging on to eighth place on the ladder by percentage and wins to either the Western Bulldogs, who play Melbourne, or St Kilda who are facing West Coast, this weekend would see Richmond take a tumble down the ladder should they lose for a third-straight week.

Clashes with finals bound Brisbane then Port Adelaide come after tonight’s clash with Fremantle, before closing the season with matches against Hawthorn and Essendon.
