A python killed and swallowed a woman whole in Indonesia

A python killed and swallowed the whole body of a woman in Indonesia, local media reported, cited by the BBC.

Jahra, aged around 50, who worked at a rubber plantation, went to work on Sunday morning. She was reported missing the same day after not returning home. Her husband found some of the clothes and tools she used on the plantation, but not Jahra herself.

The locals organized groups to look for her.

A day later, people found a python over 5 meters long with a very large stomach. The locals killed the snake and found the woman’s body inside.

“The victim was found inside the snake’s stomach. It is absolutely complete,” commented police chief Betara Jambi.

Such incidents are extremely rare, but not unheard of. In Indonesia alone, two more such cases were reported in 2017 and 2018.

Pythons swallow their food whole. Their jaws are connected by extremely flexible tendons and can stretch to swallow large prey. Their usual food is rats and small animals, but from one size up they also look for larger catches.

According to experts, pythons can reach the size of their victims. There is evidence that some of the reptiles ate large animals such as pigs and even cows.
