A nightmarish memory brought Giggs to tears in court

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs couldn’t handle the pressure during his trial. The Welshman is accused of domestic violence against his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville because on November 1, 2020, he elbowed her in the face and headbutted her during an argument.

In the courtroom, Ryan Giggs broke down in tears as he said his night in police custody was “the worst experience of his life”. He took a few minutes to calm down before continuing to testify.

Giggs previously told the court he was “confused and scared” after being accused of headbutting his girlfriend during an argument over a mobile phone. He stated that he did not intentionally hit Kate Greville on the head and that the two accidentally bumped their heads. Giving evidence for a second day, Giggs said Greville tried to take her phone from his pocket when they came face to face in the kitchen.

“She was getting more and more aggressive. We were facing each other. It was like a tug-of-war and then we hit our heads,” he said, adding that Greville then fell backwards and that “he could see quite clearly that she injured”.

Greville, 36, told the court that Giggs put both hands on her shoulders and head-butted her in the face, after which they continued their fight on the ground. There, the player smashed the woman’s lip after an elbow. However, the former football player claims that he acted in self-defense.

“Kate started kicking me in the head. As soon as we were on the floor he kicked me in the head and I defended myself. After about six or seven head kicks I just got up and we went our separate ways,” testified Giggs.

If found guilty, he faces up to 5 years behind bars.
