A marathon year 2022 for Strava

While the number of runners has increased sharply over the past two years (+30% in 2021), thanks to the closures of sports halls linked to the pandemic, sports competitions have suffered a serious setback over this same period, in due to a health context that is not conducive to the gathering of hundreds of people in the same place.

Long distances are on the rise

As a logical consequence of the return of competitions in 2022, the number of marathon runners has continued to grow. Already booming last year (+140%), the marathon is attracting more and more runners and is showing even stronger growth: +190% in France and even +269% in the Netherlands!

Figures that correspond to a basic trend that goes towards ever longer distances, including by bike. Strava thus indicates that the share of cyclists having recorded at least one “century ride”, i.e. an outing of more than 100 miles (161 km), has increased by 22% worldwide (+37% in France and +46% in France). Britain). This increase in long distance cycling is also illustrated by the rise in popularity of gravel, the associated races often being quite long.

The group effect to go the distance

If such distances can very well be covered alone, the report Year in Sports from Strava highlights the group practice trend. If the interest is obvious on the bike, in terms of taking better advantage of a peloton effect to reduce fatigue, runners also use the group effect to increase the duration and distance of outings.

Men and women thus run respectively 15% and 22% longer with several people. It’s also a good way to motivate yourself when winter arrives, with Strava indicating that runners who added group activities in 2022 had a 78% longer duration of activity than solo runners.

Be that as it may, this increase in outdoor sports activities is also leading to a renewed interest in connected and sports watches, most of which are compatible with Strava. The manufacturers are not mistaken and have largely renewed or enriched their catalog in 2022, whether at Garmin (Instinct Crossover, Venu SQ 2…), Polar (Ignite 3), Suunto (9 Peak Pro), Coros (Apex 2) and now even Apple with the Watch Ultra.
