Barcelona vs Manchester United is the nail of the 1/16-finals in the Europa League, which are practically playoffs for the 1/8-finals in the tournament. This was decided by the lot in Nyon.
A total of 16 teams took part in the draw, with the teams that finished second in their Europa League groups – Manchester United, Midtjylland, Nantes, Monaco, PSV Eindhoven, Rennes, Roma and Union Berlin – in the seeded urn. In the urn of the underdogs there were those who were eliminated from the Champions League – Ajax, Bayer Leverkusen, Barcelona, Sporting Lisbon, RB Salzburg, Shakhtar Donetsk, Sevilla and Juventus. The only restriction on the draw was that teams from the same country could not be pitted against each other.
The draw was made by former Hungarian international Zoltan Gera, who has been chosen as the UEFA ambassador for the Europa League final, which will be played on May 31 at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.
The winners of the eight Europa League groups – Arsenal, Fenerbahce, Betis, Union SZ, Real Sociedad, Feyenoord, Freiburg, Ferencvaros – have already qualified for the 1/8 finals.
The first matches will be played on February 16, 2023, and the second legs on February 23. Hosts in the second matches will be the teams placed in the draw. The winners of the doubles will qualify for the round of 16 of the Europa League, whose draw is on February 24, and the losers will end their European participation this season.
