11 Years of George R.R. Vindication Martin for the yet-to-be-released The Winds of Winter

Home of the Dragon is here, and those who prefer to visit the fantasy continent of Westeros only through the screen have something to rejoice about again. The same cannot be said for (more) readers of the literary works of the writer George R.R. Martin, on which both the new series and Game of Thrones are based.

Season after season passed the previous series, several spinoffs were developed, one of them even had its premiere…

What never happened was to see the publication of the next book in the A Song of Fire and Ice series. Although it is already clear on screen how the struggle for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms and the war with the White Walkers and their undead army ends, in the books these events have not yet happened.

The first book, Game of Thrones, appeared in 1996, followed relatively quickly by A Clash of Kings (1999) and A Storm of Swords (2000). After a five-year break, Martin managed to publish “A Feast for Crows” (2005), and after another six years – and after the start of the Game of Thrones series – “A Dance with Dragons” (2011).

This is also the last published book so far. More than 11 years later, the sixth and penultimate book, The Winds of Winter, is still not ready.

And after that, there will be a wait for “Dream of Spring”, the book for which, at least at the moment, the story is expected to end, already seen by the viewers already in 2019.

During all these 11 years, George R.R. Martin gives different information about the “upcoming” release of The Winds of Winter. Sometimes he is hopeful that he will soon succeed, sometimes he is irritated by the pressure of impatient readers. Here, with the help of Gizmodo, we show you some of the highlights from The Long Wait:

July 2011 Around the release of the sixth book, A Dance with Dragons, and the start of Game of Thrones, Martin says that he may not be able to finish the story in the planned two books, but will need three.

January 2013 Martin has blogged – and for free – one of the chapters of the upcoming Winds of Winter, which takes readers to Dorne.

February 2014 More than a year later, he also published… a paragraph from the book, from a chapter about Tyrion Lannister. Yes, not the whole chapter, not a page, just a paragraph.

March 2014 As if to make up for the previous month, the writer is re-sharing an entire chapter of the novel for free. It is titled “Mercy” and is set in Braavos.

July 2014. During an interview with a Swiss newspaper, Martin, 65 at the time, was asked what he thought of fans who worried he would die before finishing the series. “I find this question very offensive, for people to speculate about my death and health. So ‘Fuck you’ for these people,” the author says, accompanying this with a middle finger.

January 2015 At the beginning of next year, Martin’s publishing house clearly states that in the next 12 months “The Winds of Winter” will not die out. At this time, the world is preparing for the fifth season of the series Game of Thrones.

April 2015 Just a few months later, Martin still delights fans with a new ENTIRE chapter, this time dedicated to Sansa Stark, who is disguised as the Hound’s supposed illegitimate daughter.

January 2016 New year, new bad news. Martin reports that the sixth book will not appear until the then-upcoming sixth season of the series. He explains how both he and his publishers wanted The Winds of Winter to appear before March 2016, but to do that he needed to have the manuscript ready in October 2015.

As early as August, he realized that this would not happen, which in turn depressed him, but his publishers showed understanding (“Maybe they knew before I knew,” Martin wrote) and gave him another two months. He was elated, he was sure that the time would come… and you name it.

February 2016 The writer promises to put aside all other tasks until he finishes The Winds of Winter.

That hope is kindled with a new FULL chapter released online in May. And that’s it. We are going to…

January 2017 From the author with love: “It’s not ready yet, but I’m making progress. But not as much as I’d hoped a year ago when I thought it would be ready by now. I think it’ll be out this year (But hey, I thought the same last year).”

In the summer of 2017, it became clear that this was unlikely to happen. However, Martin explains how in 2018 “Fire and Blood” will be ready – the first volume of the history of the Targaryen rule (which also became the basis for the series “House of the Dragon” years later).

April 2018 “The Winds of Winter” will not be published this year either, says the author. At the end of 2018, however, “Fire and Blood” will really be released (wait, didn’t he promise in 2016 to only write “The Winds…”?)

May 2019 Actor Ian McElhinney, who plays Ser Barristan Selmy, has said publicly that Martin has finished the last two books, but had an “understanding” with the show’s creators not to publish them before the end of Game of Thrones. When the “news” spreads, the writer immediately disputes it – no, the books are not ready, he says, and the last one, “A Dream of Spring”, has not even been started.

“[Издателите по света] they make millions and millions of dollars every time a new Fire and Ice book comes out, me too. There is no point in delaying. Why would HBO want to delay the books? The books help create interest in the series, just as the series helps create interest in the books,” the author points out.

May 2019 The world has said goodbye to the series Game of Thrones, the last season has caused mixed reactions. Martin reassures that the books will not end the same way.

In the same month, he faces a deadline related to the Worldcon event in New Zealand, which is usually in August. “If I don’t have The Winds of Winter in my hand when I arrive in New Zealand for Worldcon, you have my formal written permission to lock me in a small room on the Isle of Wight [остров с вулкан]looking at the lake of sulfuric acid until I finish it,” Martin boldly snapped.

October 2019 The world already knows about the upcoming House of the Dragon, a spinoff of Game of Thrones. Martin notes that he may be able to write several scripts for the episodes, but makes another commitment to his (more) readers:

“But … let me be very clear … I will not take on any screenplays until I have finished and submitted The Winds of Winter,” says the writer, indicating that the book remains his priority.

March 2020 The pandemic is coming, winter is not. Martin says he spends more time in Westeros than in the real world and writes every day. A few months later, he again repeats the well-known mantra that there are “good days” (that is, when the writing goes well) and “bad days” (when it doesn’t work).

At the beginning of next year, he defines 2020 as a success. “Wrote hundreds and hundreds of pages of The Winds of Winter in 2020. Best year I’ve had [с работа по книгата], since I started it. Why? I do not know. Maybe the isolation. Or maybe I’m on a streak,” the author wrote.

May 2022 To the surprise of absolutely no one, Martin announces that The Winds of Winter will be a “big book”, longer than the previous two. “I usually shorten them when I’m done [с писането]but first I have to finish,” adds the writer.

In July of the same year, he explained that he “worked on it, is working on it and will continue to work on it”. It adds to how the writing of the sixth book takes the story further and further away from the events of the last seasons of the Game of Thrones series – indicates that some things will stay the same, others will change (this will also affect the death of some characters). In general, he adds that writing is “difficult”.

July 2022. Martin reports that he has tested positive for the coronavirus. This has forced him to postpone several public appearances, including Comic-Con and the premiere of the Home of the Dragon series, and isolate himself in his hotel. He says he will then return to his home in Santa Fe and continue working on The Winds of Winter…and other projects of his.

August 12, 2022 In a long blog post explaining how he’s coping with COVID, how he raised a baby dragon with the DracARys app, and how he watched The Sandman, Martin does insert ONE sentence about the book.

“Hopefully I’ll end up with the story from one of the characters [от чиято гледна точка разказвам] in The Winds of Winter. Maybe even two,” writes the writer. So much.

August 21-22, 2022 We’re coming to the premiere of House of the Dragon, a Game of Thrones prequel based on the book Fire and Blood. Martin, 73, is an executive producer on the series.

As for The Winds of Winter, there is no published date for the novel yet. In July 2022, 11 years have passed since the release of the previous one – “A Dance with Dragons”.

What can we say in conclusion, except that Joe Abercrombie (The First Law Trilogy) seems to us to be the most suitable young fantasy writer to complete A Song of Fire and Ice in case… Martin lingered a little longer , right…
